Close to the exit of the tidal stream Jade lies Mellum. This sand island is a special protected natural reserve. The surrounding tidal flats and the island itself are a refuge for masses of birds. A nature conservation association pursues a bird observation station on this island.
Because the roof of this station was degraded they asked the THW for transporting construction material to the island. As the island has no harbour installations the association hired a landing craft to bring the material from the mainland harbour to the edge of the tidal flats. Our duty was the transportion by a 6WD truck and trailer across the tidal flats during low water to the island itself. This mission was quite challenging and exciting, especially the sea-transport of our trucks.
Below you can see some photos. It is a pity that the photo quality is not the best due to splashes of sea water on the lense.
